Chester Loses To Sparta In Regional


Brendan Baughman held Sparta to one run over the first four innings.

Chester ended its season with a 13-11 loss to Sparta in the regional opener May 16.

The game mirrored the last meeting between the two teams when Sparta erased an early Chester lead and the teams played to a tie.

In the regional game, Chester led 10-7 entering the seventh, but Sparta scored six runs in the top of the seventh to advance to the regional semi-final.

Chance Mott had a double, single and two RBI’s and Gage Hasemeyer had two hits and two RBIs. Trace Fricke had two hits and an RBI and Matt James had a hit and two RBIs. Dylan Kelkhoff, Jesse Heath and Brendan Baughman each had a hit and an RBI. Kaden Freytag had a double and Ethan Stumpe drove in a run.

Aiden Blechle took the loss for Chester.

Chester ended the season 5-17-1.

Chester took an early lead, but a late Sparta comeback resulted in a 13-13 tie on May 11.

Chester build a 10-1 lead after four innings, but Sparta scored nine runs in the final three innings and the game was tied after regulation. After two scoreless extra innings, the game was called as a tie.

Dylan Kelkhoff had a double, two singles and two RBIs. Matt James and Brendan Baughman each had a single, double and two RBIs. Ethan Stumpe had a double, single and an RBI. Evan Bland had two hits and an RBI. Kaden Freytag and Chance Mott both had a hit and an RBI. Trace Fricke, Gage Hasemeyer and Jesse Heath also had hits.

Baughman threw no-hit ball into the fifth, but ended up giving up three earned runs on only two hits while striking out five. Aiden Blechle three scoreless innings, striking out three.

Chester played at Grizzlies Stadium in Sauget on May 12, losing to St.Pius X of Festus, Mo., 16-1.

Chester lost to Murphysboro 14-0 on May 14.
