Jason Sibley is a sophomore and percussionist in the CHS band. “Being in band is an experience,” Sibley said. “A lot of people see it as a class, or a thing to just get through, like a fine arts credit. It’s the world. If you are considering being in band, I’d say do it.”
Sibley joined band because his sisters were both in band and were like, ‘Jason, I think you’d really enjoy it. Try it out, I swear you’ll have fun.’ He then explained that he took my sisters’ advice, and hates to admit it, but they’re right. His favorite part of Band is marching band even though many other people when asked about their favorite part would answer pep band.
As well as Marching Band being Sibley’s favorite part, he has a favorite piece of music for each part of band. For marching band, it would have to be ‘Dream On’ from last year. For pep it would be ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love.’ For concert band, I’d have to say, ‘Princeton Variations.’
He explained he join percussion because, “Whenever we were going through instruments with Mrs. Colonel, [back in 5th grade] she had me going through trumpet, trombone, and clarinet. When we went through percussion, she said, ‘I really need someone for percussion,’ and I agreed. That decision made me into the person I am today.”
Sibley furthermore explained that “I always wanted to play the flute, and my mom said, ‘You’ll get picked on for it!’ I saw so many other people playing clarinet and flute. Now that I’ve seen what being a percussionist is like, I really enjoy it. I really don’t think I’d have it any other way. I’m used to moving my wrists.”
