Mrs. Hankins and her Green Team organized a community wide celebration on Friday, April 19, for 2024’s Earth Day.
Throughout the day, there were many groups and activities the students were separated into to help beautify Chester as a whole. This consisted of going to the Cohen Fields, the Chester Grade School, St. Johns, St. Mary’s, working in front of the school, working on both the football and track fields, working in the kitchen, and more.
Each group was monitored by their second-hour teacher or a fill-in for them. Both students and teachers/staff were expected to put in an equal amount of work to help better the community.
Once the groups finished and made their way back inside of CHS, lunch was served. There had been an all-day cookout for not only the high school students and staff to enjoy, but also the eighth graders too.
After lunch, everyone was seated in Colbert Gym and watched the film, “The Impossible” (2012), for the remainder of the day where free water and popcorn were available and soda was able to buy.
There was a raffle set up where if you simply showed up, your name was put in and you could win a prize, and if you had bought an Earth Day t-shirt then you were able to pick two prizes. Names were drawn during the intermission of the film.
Students who showed up were also given a slip to be able to get a free snow cone during lunch. They were also allowed to leave school 20 minutes early if they had a ride that day.
