For every day of October, I will be explaining different popular Halloween costumes, give a brief description of them, and even some background information about said costume! This will be able to give you readers some Halloween inspiration and hopefully put you in the spooky spirit.
You may ask yourself, “Why do people dress up on this day?” and the answer is because people believed if they disguised themselves on Halloween, it would ward off spirits. Over years that slowly became into the fun holiday it is now where people can be whoever or whatever they want!
Now onto the first costume of October, the witch.
Now I’m sure the majority of people know about the Salem Witch Trials, which caused many independent women to be accused of “witchcraft” and “working with the Devil.” Obviously, they never walked around with cauldrons that had bright green goo in it and flew on brooms, they dressed like everyone else at the time. Most women back then actually wore big pointy black hats, so that’s where that staple of the costume came from.
The basics of a witch costume often includes black and purple colors, a black dress, often with big sleeves, pointy black hats, a broom, and occasionally some potions! There has been different versions of the witch costume such as the Wicked Witch of the West which adds some green skin, the Sanderson Sisters who all have different dresses and capes, Witches from the Harry Potter franchise, and more!
If you have any pictures of you dressed up as a witch, and if you would like them to be showcased on the Sting, email me and I’ll include them in this story!
