New Orleans has a lot to offer visitors to the Big Easy such as museums, different cultures, Cajun food, jazz music, parades, art vendors, and different attractions. One of the most iconic Halloween attractions is the Skeleton House on St. Charles Ave.
Louellen and Darryl Berger bought the historic home on the corner of St. Charles Avenue in 1978 and have made Halloween a beloved season for all in New Orleans for the past few years. They spend all year creating the clothing and coming up with ideas for the following year. Their home decorations kick off the season annually with creative and humorous skeletons that many consider ‘quintessentially New Orleans.'” They wanted the decorations to be funny instead of scary. There are also boxes outside the where locals can put in ideas for the following year.
The Berger family adorns their home with hundreds of laminated signs featuring ‘humerus’ puns: ‘lazy bones,’ ‘attached at the hip,’ ‘bone dry,’ and more. Known as the Queen of Halloween among her family and neighbors, Berger’s terrifying displays always have a theme. Past concepts have included Maison Maskquerade and E.T. Bone Home. Each skeleton in her collection also has a clever name like ‘King Gore-ge,’ ‘Rolling Bones,’ and ‘Snoop Dogg-Gone. This year’s theme is ScarERAS tour” era. The new display celebrates Taylor Swift’s arrival in New Orleans for her sold out concerts Oct. 25-27 with skeletons representing each era of her career. Skeletons pay tribute to her ‘Reputation Era,’and ‘Red Era,’There are some fan favorites that have returned every year, but most of the skeletons are for the “Swifties”. Berger expects thousands of Taylor Swift fans to visit her French colonial home while the singer is in town and plans to distribute thousands of fun light-up lanyards and friendship bracelets.
Some of the other skeletons are influence by famous singers like Riba, Gwen Skullfani, Blake Skelton, Socketman Skelton John, Carrie Underground, Patella Fitzgerald, Skelilton, and Katie Bury.
While others are from movies such as Beauty and the Deceased, Dead Poets Society, GhostDuster, Scary Potter, Death Star, and Gone with the Skin.
The display is put on from Oct.1 to Nov. 1.
