Revolution Chaput’s poem “The Pupal Stage and Its Many Dances” received 2nd Place in the January CHS Poem of the Month competition. The theme for this month’s challenge was “beginnings.”
According to Rev, “I am very silly and utterly obsessed with animals. Especially insects. I also write, sometimes, I think…”
“The Pupal Stage and Its Many Dances”
I am often known for my recollection; subtle knowings of emerald,
All choreographed in light; daffodils spread out in fields and ruffled
With the wind; sleights of hand and distant card tricks, the first card in
Each and every tarot deck. I am often known for my verdant eyes,
And the day they were plucked from my head.
I am meadows and forests and weeping willow trees, invasive roots,
And new life, home to all the little things, and I might live far beyond
These leaps of faith, these walks toward death. When we meet,
You won’t see me, and I won’t see you. There is no method to life.
No formula, no ancient rite. There are only these small blindspots
And the shifts in between.
I will not show up in mirrors,
Will not grant your wishes,
Will not speak your lies.
But I have been known to offer
Wings.
