On February 3rd, Señora Zeiger, Mrs. Stegmann, and Mr. Dinç took Spanish Club and ESL/ELL students to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (SIUC), so they can celebrate their annual World Languages and Cultures Day! This equaled up to 43 different Chester High School students all together, and about 1,000 students from 15 different high schools overall!
After leaving school at 8:00 AM, they were. seated for the introduction ceremony, which explained what the day was about and thanked everyone who helped out. They also played a game where they had to guess the language that the person was speaking in during the introduction.
The students were then able to choose from multiple different classes and activities that they could enjoy throughout the day. This includes, but not limited to, trying Spanish Zumba, learning different songs in other languages, being educated on the history of African drums, playing Bingo, crafting activities, and so much more!
They were then able to go to the food lounge in SIUC and have lunch and grab any treats they wanted to bring back to school, such as Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, pizza, and more!
With this being Señora Zeiger’s last year teaching at CHS, I wanted to get her insight on this day. Here is what she said, “I love this day and have participated every year they’ve had it since 1993, when I first started at CHS. I love the sessions and wish I could attend more of them. I miss the Spanish scholar bowl which they did away with about 10 years ago.” Thank you for allowing us to have such a fun and special day, everyone at CHS will greatly miss you!
