On March 5th, the CHS Student Council took a field trip to Benton IL where they attended the LEDSC Convention. There they listened to reports on the LEDSC Executive Board, heard a keynote speech plus some magic tricks from Josh McVicar, heard from Superintendent Mr. Deterring, and Cam Myers spoke on behalf of IASC.
Upon arrival, the student council checked into the event, took a picture, then walked around for a bit in order to see the candidates running for future LEDSC officer positions. To begin, the meeting was called to order, officers shared their annual meeting reports, McVicar began his keynote speech, candidates running for office shared their speeches, then the council was fed lunch. After lunch we heard more from McVicar about the Magic of Connections, as well as voting on which candidates they thought would fit the Executive Board best.
Josh McVicar gave an incredible keynote speech at the convention. There he not only spoke of making these connections but also had some fun with a bit of magic. He did things such as read people’s minds, make things disappear and reappear, and even hypnotized several including one of our own students. This was definitely one of the best keynote speeches most of us have seen as it was so enjoyable and there was a surprise around every corner.
Due to the time it would take to get back to the school, the council left the Benton Civic Center at 1:25 so they did miss hearing awards but were made aware who won through social media.
On the way back, the majority of members took a nap on the bus which was much needed. It was a very long day, but a very fun day and we can’t wait to hopefully go back next year!!
A big thank you to Mrs. Hammel, Mrs. Miller, and Mr. Blechle for taking our student council to this incredible convention! We could never ask for better sponsors!
