Jason Sibley is at it again with his THIRD 1st-Place win!
Students in the CHS Writers’ Circle selected Jason’s poem “Thorns” as the winner of the “Spring” poetry challenge. Judging is blind — meaning judges do not know who wrote each poem while voting. Students were invited to interpret this theme in any way, and both winners this month made interesting use of this simple word.
According to Jason, “I am an actor, musician and writer. I like to write in my spare time to collect thoughts. My writing is a hobby and it brings me joy.” Jason has also recently placed third in the Chester Public Library poetry competition, and first place in the SWIC poetry competition. He was also the CHS winner of Poetry Out Loud, local competition, in January.
Thorns
As the day becomes longer,
and the nights shorter,
it is bittersweet in comparison.
The cold goes away to hibernate,
and the Sun comes out to play.
A double-edged sword.
The sting of hot, spring weather,
feels more like freshly fallen roses,
and the quake in my nostrils,
feels more like an attack on my sinuses.
My face aches with pain, as my voice becomes hoarse.
And I look like hell.
But the Sun is shining and it’s a brand new day.
My eyes are watery,
my ears hurt,
my nose congested,
my spirits high.
And I look to mother nature,
and I ask, “Why?”
