The first follows Pvt. Miller, a young American soldier fighting on the Pacific front of World War Two. He is a member of the 2nd Marine Division who survives a failed recon mission—after the rest of his squad is defeated by the Japanese Army, he is rescued by Sgt. Sullivan and the 1st Marine Division. With them are Pvt. Polonsky and Cpl. Roebuck, part of “Carlson’s Raiders.” You join them in an assault on a Japanese military base.
The next missions continue as you play as Miller. You and the unit attack a Japanese airfield and later an artillery position after clearing a bunker. During the operation, Sullivan is stabbed by a Japanese officer and is declared KIA, which promotes Roebuck to Sergeant.
The story then shifts to Pvt. Dimitri Petrenko, a rifleman in the 3rd Shock Brigade of the Soviet Army during the Battle of Stalingrad. You wake up in a drained fountain surrounded by the dead—only Sgt. Reznov survives, though he has lost a finger during the German assault. He gives you his rifle, and together you move through the torn city to execute the man responsible for the attack, Heinrich Amsel. After defeating him, the game moves to Seelow Heights, where you rendezvous with the Russian Army and assault German positions.
The campaign continues with missions alternating between Miller and Dimitri, each fighting alongside their respective allies. Miller’s final mission takes place at Shuri Castle. As you fight your way through ancient structures, you reach a courtyard where Japanese soldiers appear to surrender—only to launch a grenade ambush. You must choose to save either Roebuck or Polonsky; whichever you save, the other is killed.
Dimitri’s final mission occurs in Berlin, the capital of Germany. As the Russian Army assaults the Reichstag—the seat of German government—you battle through the devastated building and eventually plant the Soviet flag at the top, signaling the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
