Album #1: Submarine by The Marías
Favorite Song: “Paranoia”
Notes: Submarine by The Marías was mainly written by the band’s lead singer, María Zardoya, where she was inspired by water itself and how the majority of it has never been explored. This is important as I personally feel like the album itself is its own exploration of one’s mind, and how we struggle to fully understand our emotions, actions, environment, and how we interact with others. It especially explores the different kinds of love we experience and how we may never fully understand every detail about it. This portion of the album reminds me a lot of one of my favorite songs ever, “Kaleidoscope” by Chappell Roan. She sings about how both the idea of love and kaleidoscopes are similar, as how the colors and shapes shown through the kaleidoscopes are never the same, and no relationship is ever the same. María Zardoya sings about how everyone views the concept of love differently, and that’s why they always seem to leave different kinds of marks on you and how it can change how you view it all. You can try your hardest to change your current relationship to be like a previous one, or you can move a kaleidoscope to recreate the same shape and color combination, but in the end it will never work out. I believe this album to be one of the prettiest and most well-written albums to exist. In the process of listening to it, you will definitely think a lot about your past and even try to look at things from a different perspective.
Album #2: I’m Doing It Again Baby! by Girl In Red
Favorite Song: “You Need Me Now? (feat. Sabrina Carpenter)”
Notes: Girl In Red is an artist that I’ve been listening to for years now. She’s not one of my favorites, but her music has definitely shaped parts of who I am today. So I really tried to force myself to love this album, but it just wasn’t that good. It was just okay, like a solid 5 out of 10 for me. There was nothing that memorable about it for me, and it was nowhere near as good as her previous works. I wish she tried something new, but it was just so basic and didn’t seem to match the vibe of her other works. It was just so boring and almost unlistenable for me, and I definitely won’t be adding it to any of my playlists. That being said, you are always welcome to listen to the album to form your own opinions, and if you enjoyed it then don’t let anyone else change your mind! Sadly, it just didn’t work for me personally.
Album #3: Karma by Stray Kids
Favorite Song: “Bleep”
Notes: This album was a suggestion by Yamilett Fuentes! Now, I absolutely love listening to K-Pop or just “idol” music in general, but I’ve only ever listened to girl groups. Not that there is anyone wrong with the boybands, but I’ve just always gravitated towards the girls. So Karma is the first ever male K-Pop album I have listened to! When I say I heavily enjoyed this album, I mean it. It was very upbeat and fun at times, but Stray Kids were also able to speak out about mental health too which was very interesting. Their music style is so unique and fun, and I couldn’t get enough of it. This has most definitely made me want to listen to some of their other works!
