Album #1: I Can Be Your Mother by Sofia Isella
Favorite Song: “Unattractive”
Notes: This was a suggestion from fellow Sting writer Megan Zimmer! Sofia Isella writes about important topics throughout this tiny EP and backs up the hauntingly beautiful lyrics with her own violin skills. The EP itself starts with a violin instrumental that Isella performed herself. In the song “Unattractive,” Isella poetically sings about the struggles of being a woman in this day and age, where many of us are objectified and aren’t seen as real people with genuine emotions. Isella sings about how women wish to change their bodies so people would stop commenting on them, which is something everyone can relate to. We all wish we could change something about ourselves to bring less attention to that aspect of our bodies. The artistic choices Isella makes within this EP are truly beautiful, and I highly recommend that everyone listen to it. It’s a quick listen, but it will truly stick with you for a while.
Album #2: Princess Of Power by Marina
Favorite Song: “Je Ne Sais Quoi”
Notes: Marina’s newest album blends different decades and genres of music to create this upbeat electronic and disco pop album that allows you to enjoy listening to it while still empowering Marina to express her emotions. A significant theme of Marina’s music in this album is that she doesn’t let past relationships define her, especially when she was treated poorly. She instead understands that she can learn from these relationships, but that doesn’t mean she has to hide from love anymore, instead embraces her own self-love and finding the right person for her. Princess of Power truly stands strong to the name, as it supports Marina’s quest in staying true to herself while finding someone who loves her for her.
Album #3: Midnight Minuet by The Yagas
Favorite Song: “Life of a Widow”
Notes: The gothic and metal elements of The Yagas’ debut album, Midnight Minuet, create the perfect alternative album that’s dreary and sounds like it belongs in a psychological horror film! This makes perfect sense, as The Yagas’ lead singer is Vera Farmiga, known for her intense horror roles such as The Conjuring, Orphan, and Bates Motel. The rise in fame for the band can largely be credited to Farmiga, who recently appeared in the latest and last movie of The Conjuring series, The Conjuring: Last Rites, so with both coming out around the same time, Farmiga was doing a lot of advertising to bring attention to both. I absolutely loved this album, and I’m so excited to see what the future holds for this wonderful band. The music is just perfect, especially as we grow closer to Halloween, and I highly recommend it!
