Mrs. Kern and her students are making cookies for the upcoming parent-teacher conferences! The idea that inspired Kern and her class to make these cookies for the parent-teacher conference was their desire to contribute positively to the event.
The students are making M&M, chocolate chip, and sugar cookies. Everything done is independently, including getting ingredients, organizing, planning, and anything they may need to do for this project. This is a project that students have already completed in class; now they are making the quantity of cookies to accommodate the number of parents attending. There will be enough cookies for everyone to enjoy!
The students find this activity exciting and fun; they are eager to show off their progress and skills as bakers. By participating in this project, they are learning independent living skills, planning, organizing, and more. The goal is for parents to have a positive impression of this project, seeing their children’s active, hands-on participation in the CHS foods program. Kern hopes to make this a traditional activity during certain fun events.
One of their funniest memories so far has been when a student put too much butter in the cookie pan, so they had to make a cookie cake instead of normal individual cookies. The most popular cookie flavor being made is the chocolate chip cookie, but if Kern could add another cookie flavor, it would be oatmeal cookies. Kern’s personal favorite of all the flavors would have to be the sugar cookies.
When asked how she would describe this experience in one word, Kern says it has been known as “joyful.” Next time, we could be expecting more flavors of cookies or more desserts – who knows!
