The Year of Seventeen
August 21, 2022
They say that this is my last year to decide.
Every adult yells, “what will you do? There’s not much time!”.
“What job will you have and where will you go?
You’re almost eighteen; why don’t you know?!”
They ask about marriage, having babies, and higher education,
and no matter your response they had a better expectation.
Then they tell you how to act and what to do.
“Go here, do this, don’t have one kid, have two,”
Now whenever I feel tired of all their questions,
I just lie and say that I’ll use all their suggestions,
because even if my life isn’t what they envision,
In time my future will become my own decision.
