Midnights Explodes Expectations
January 20, 2023
Taylor Swift is victoriously known for gatekeeping when her new albums come out. For most Swifties, the new album, Midnights, was a massive deal. Not only did Miss Swift give us small Easter eggs and hints for the new album, but she hinted this album in her prior albums. The album has only been out for four months, and the charts are skyrocketing.
Taylor Swift is known for her love songs or even breakup songs, but many fans say this album barely fits in these categories. This album focuses on Taylor Swift and her growing up with many complications because she did not have a normal childhood. The album came out on October 21, 2022. The songs came out exactly when the clock hit 12:00 a.m.. There were so many people trying to listen to the new album that Spotify malfunctioned and broke down for 15 minutes. There were 13 (Swift’s lucky number) songs that had come out when the clock had hit midnight. Once the album was released, Swift made an announcement that there would be a 3 a.m. surprise. While waiting for the surprise, everyone listened to the first 13 songs that included “Snow On The Beach,” “Karma,” “You’re On Your Own Kid,” “Bejeweled,” “Maroon,” “Midnight Rain,” “Question…?” “Sweet Nothing,” “Lavender Haze,” “Anti-Hero,” “Vigilante S##t”, “Mastermind” and “Labyrinth.” At first, there was a little disappointment from her fans because they were not expecting this. Once they had a few listens they were obsessed. The most popular song was “Anti-Hero,” which was a song about Swift not feeling like she ever fits in and dealing with her depression. Another popular song was “Bejeweled,” which is about Swift hyping herself up being the best version of herself. Every song had its own time of being the most loved and the most hated. More very popular songs from the album were “Question…?” “You’re On Your Own Kid,” “Karma” and “Midnight Rain.” Among the most hated songs were “Snow On The Beach” and ”Labyrinth.” “Snow On The Beach” featured Lana Del-Ray, who is a very loved artist. She did not have much of a part and listeners could barely tell she was even there. Because of the absence of Del-Ray, many fans were very disappointed after saying “Snow On The Beach” is going to be the best one. “Labyrinth” is a very soft song, so many fans never really enjoyed the song to its full potential. Overall, the fans were pleased with the album, and the hate on the album was not as much as most of us expected.
When the clock had hit 3 a.m., the next 7 songs had come out. They had taken a whole day to appear on Apple Music due to the amount of people listening to the album at the same time. The seven songs included “The Great War,” “Bigger Than The Whole Sky,” “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve,” “Paris,” “High Infidelity,” “Dear Reader” and “Glitch,” The most popular song from this addition to the album is “Paris,” which is an upbeat song that many listeners love to just listen to. The most underrated or hated song was “High Infidelity,” which has a weird beginning with many sound effects many listeners were confused about. The song overall switches from a soft tone to a louder tone, which many listeners also did not like. The addition made many of her fans and listeners very pleased with the “surprise.”
This album had 228 million streams in one night and 1.5 million vinyls sold. On the top 10 charts, Taylor Swift’s album had taken up every spot for weeks. Miss Swift broke many records in pop history from this album. This album had many Swifties’ jaws on the floor and pleased so many people.
