Chief of Police Ryan Coffey and Sgt. Bobby Helmers of the Chester Police Department presented a program Nov. 26 on surviving an active shooter incident. They taught students about the four e’s of school shootings:

Educate – Teach students and teachers what to do in case of a shooting and how to recognize signs of a potential shooter.

Evade – Lock doors, turn lights off, and attempt to make the room seem empty. A shooter is unlikely to try to break down a locked door and waste time.

Escape – Leave the building if possible. Get to a safe area.

Engage – If you have no other option, engage with the shooter in the form of makeshift weapons and distractions.
