It’s that time of the month for another game review! This month I chose Sniper Elite 4. Made by Rebellion Developments and released on February 14, 2017, it is the fourth installment of the Sniper Elite franchise (not including the side series Zombie Army).
The game takes place in 1943 during the Allied invasion of Italy in World War II.
The game continues the story of British Special Operations Executive (SOE) agent Lieutenant Karl Fairburne and his mission to stop the Axis and their “Wunderwaffen,” or wonder weapons — a series of special weapons the Axis have been using to halt the Allies and prevent their victory in World War II. The newly discovered weapon is called a “Razor Missile,” an explosive weapon that can target Allied assets and cause devastating casualties while keeping the Nazis out of harm’s way. As Karl makes his way through Fascist-controlled Italy, he uncovers more about the missiles and their creator, Heinz Böhm, a Gruppenführer (group leader) of the Nazi SS, also known as the “Butcher of Bologna” or by his alias, Hanz Dorfmann.
Karl eventually meets a group of Italian Resistance fighters and Sofia “Angel” Di Rocco, the leader of the local resistance. She tasks Karl with several missions — such as destroying bridges and artillery and infiltrating bases and dockyards — until he finds the Razor Missile construction site and the location where he believes Böhm is hiding: Allagra Fortress. When Karl enters the main room, it is initially empty until Böhm appears with two guards, one of them holding Sofia, who says that she failed her people. Karl encourages Sofia to fight back against the Fascist army; she does but fails, and Böhm shoots her and orders his men to execute Karl. Karl grabs a handgun and kills the guards. Böhm tries to escape in his aircraft, but Karl runs outside and shoots the engines, causing the plane to explode and killing Böhm in the process. Karl then uses a radio to call the British Royal Air Force, and as he escapes, the Air Force bombs the facility, destroying the documents and research on the Razor Missiles. A few weeks later, Karl speaks to Colonel Jack Weaver of the U.S. Army, who offers Karl a deployment to France to help during the Allied assault against the Nazis. Karl accepts eagerly, setting up the plot for the next game.
