The Chester High School Sting won the Digital Blue Banner Award at the Southern Illinois School Press Association (SISPA) Winter Conference Feb. 27 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. This follows the Print Blue Banner The Sting achieved last school year.

The day at SISPA involved on-site competitions in various categories including news writing, photography, and editing. Those who decided not to compete had opportunities to attend educational sessions on topics relating to writing, photography, and yearbook design. Following this was the award ceremony in which The Sting accepted the Digital Blue Banner Award.

In addition to the overall prize, individual members won six other awards. In cartooning, Berrimand Breeden took 1st and Emarre’a Bell placed 2nd. In multi-media stories, Chester took all three awards, 1st place going to Melody Colonel and her story “Let’s Have a Christmas Celebration,” 2nd place going to “Students Schooled on Active Shooter Safety,” which was written by Jaci South with photography by Andy Bryant. and 3rd place went to “U.S. History Classes See LST 325” which had photographs by Chris Schwier, Mallary Vasquez, and Cordy Stirnaman. Finally, The Sting took 3rd in Home Page Design, with credit for the design going to Jaci South.
